He received his musical education mainly at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg and Lübeck and completed his studies with Professor James Wagner and Professor Günter Binge. 1996-1998 engagement at the Lübeck Theatre where he had the opportunity to sing the main roles of the lyric tenor’s repertoire like Don Ottavio / Don Giovanni, Belmonte / Entführung aus dem Serail, Alfredo / La Traviata, Alfred / Die Fledermaus. Since 1999 Stephan Rügamer is a regular member of the Berlin State Opera engaged by Daniel Barenboim. Under his musical direction he sang David in the new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and later Froh in Das Rheingold, Steuermann / Der fliegende Holländer, Chevalier / Der ferne Klang (new production Peter Mussbach/Michael Gielen), Sänger / Rosenkavalier, Tamino / Zauberflöte, Boris / Katja Kabanova, Schuisky / Boris Godunow (new production, Daniel Barenboim). Also under the direction of Daniel Barenboim Stephan Rügamer sang his first Erik in Der fliegende Holländer during a visit of the Berlin State Opera to the Teatro Real in Madrid in 2004. Mr. Rügamer has appeared as a guest artist at the opera houses in Frankfurt and Essen as well as at the Dresden, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart State Operas, at the Théâtre Châtelet in Paris as Matteo in a new production of Arabella, Boris / Katja Kabanova at the Teatro Real Madrid during the 2007/2008 season followed by Tannhäuser / Walther von der Vogelweide, March/April 2009 under the direction of Jesús López Cobos. Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Prokofjew: Der Spieler / Marquis (May 2008) with reinvitation for the 2009/2010 season as Rheingold / Loge.
