Wenwei ZHANG


 

His forthcoming engagements include Varlaamin Boris Godunov, Le Comte des Grieux in Manon in Dortmund, Ferrando in Il Trovatore in Dortmund, and Sarastro in The Magic Flutein Bordeaux, Filippo II in Don Carloin Dortmund, Larkens / La fanciulla del West , Der 2. Geharnischter / Die Zauberflötein Opera de Paris.

In the 2011-12 season he sang Daland in Der fliegende Holländer in Dortmund, Oroveso in Norma and Colline in La Bohème in Dortmund. In 2010-11 he sang Ferrando in Il Trovatore in Bordeaux, 5. Jude in Salome  in Monte Carlo.

During the 2009-10 season, he was a member of the Frankfurt Opera, where he sang Lord Rochefort in Anna Bolena, Der zweite Geharnischter in Die Zauberflöte, Uin Sci in L’Oracolo by Leoni. He was also heard in Nancy as Le Fauteuil - l’Arbrein L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, and in Nantes as Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In July 2009, he sang a highly acclaimed Orosmanoin Bellini’s Zaïra, at the Festival de Montpellier. In October 2008, he sang the Doctor in Verdi’s Macbeth at the Opera de Nice. During his stay in the south of France, he auditioned for the CNIPAL and was accepted as a resident for the seasons 2007-2009.

Noted for his success in the opera house as well as on the concert stage, , he gave a recital during the Radio France Festival in Montpellier in July 2008. He also sang Mozart’s Requiemwith the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra conducted by Philippe Bender in November 2009.

He sang Roucher in Giordano’s Andrea Chenier at the Opera of Nancy (France). He returned there in September-October 2008 to sing in the world premiere of Giorgio Basttistelli’s Divorce à l”Italienne. In March 2007, at Avignon (France) he prepared the role of Zuniga, in Carmen under the direction of Michel Plasson and produced by Nadine Duffaut, with the participation of the Chinese Embassy in France. Performances were later staged in the Grand Theatre of Shanghai. That December, he sang in Faisons Ensemble un Beau Voyage a pastiche of comic operas created and directed by Yves Coudray and produced at the opera houses of Nice, Avignon and Marseille.

Wenwei Zhang was born in 1979 in Dalian, China. He began his musical studies at the age of 13 and passed the entrance exams to the Opera, Theatre and Dance Centre at Liao Ning. In 2001, he began studying singing with Professor Yan Yang and in preparation for his undergraduate studies.

A noted winner of many international competitions, Zhang won the 2ndprize of the J. Aragall de Sabadeli International Song Contest in Spain in April 2008. In August 2009, he won the 3rd Price of the Operalia Competition founded by Plácido Domingo.

He has also won many competitions in his native China. In 2004, he won the Golden Prize in the Bel-Canto category at the Annual Song Contest organized by Chinese television. He represented his Region at the 2005 Neue Stimmen International Contest at Gütersloh (Germany) where he received an "Honorable Mention”. The same year he won the silver medal at the "Jin Zhong Jian” 5th International Singing Contest.
